#44516 2015! Happy New Year!

Posted by TiM on 01 January 2015 - 03:41 PM

No, I'm not dead. I've still been lurking around here all the time. XD

Happy new year everyone! Hope you had a stellar 2014 and are looking forward to a great 2015.

I'm feeling a bit down right now since I just saw the 2014 happy new year post just below this one. Sadly, as much as I was hoping, nothing really came to fruition out of UberGames in 2014. ^_^;

It's certainly not from a lack of ideas, but more from a lack of time.

In any case, I'm hoping 2015 will be different. I'm working on freeing up some more time for myself this year, and hopefully we'll get something off the ground. :)

Either way, hope you all had a happy new year! ^_^

#44385 Happy New Year 2014~!

Posted by TiM on 06 January 2014 - 05:55 PM

Hi everyone!

A bit late, but nonetheless, Happy New Year for 2014! I hope you've all made some new year resolutions and are as excited about this year as I am! :)

It only actually recently occurred to me, but at the same time, UberGames just hit 10 years old! Blimey, that was fast!

While not too much has been happening at UberGames lately, I'm hoping to change that this year. I'm hoping to finally finish up on iComics, my little iOS app and start a few projects that I've had in limbo for farrrr too long.

In any case, hope you enjoyed the holidays and are looking forward to a whole new year!

Game on!

#44379 Merry Christmas Everyone!

Posted by TiM on 25 December 2013 - 02:04 PM

It's almost over here in Australia, but I thought I'd wait until everyone had reached the proper time zone before doing this. :)

So without further ado:

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

I hope you've all spent a lovely time with friends and family today, and also received some epic goodies as well.

And now, onto the Doctor Who Christmas Special! XD

Take care everyone!

#44364 Site Updates: November 2013

Posted by TiM on 26 November 2013 - 04:43 PM

G'day everyone!

I've done a smidge of maintenance on the website to fix a few outlying issues it was having. :)

  1. A database migration that our hosting service, Ennoverse, performed this week accidentally converted the character encoding used in the UberGames CMS, causing a bunch of pages to stop working. After doing a batch convert back to UTF-8, I think I've got it working again. (Though if you do happen to see any funky characters, please let me know. :))
  2. At some point this year, Twitter deprecated the previous API the Twitter widget at the bottom was using. After a bit of playing with an OAuth-supported version of the same library, I've brought the widget back up. It will now post the latest tweet from either the official UberGames account, or any tweet with '@ubergames' or '#ubergames' in it. :)
  3. After the forums started to get bombarded with spam bots, I upgraded the forum software, and implemented a custom question in the account sign-up form to make sure it would stop. So far so good. :)

As always, if you see anything borked, or anything that could use improvement, let me know. :)

#43916 UberGames on Twitter!

Posted by TiM on 09 July 2013 - 05:03 PM

This is something I've been aiming at for.... a fair few years now. ^_^;

One thing I want to ensure is that for the sake of utmost brand conformity, and to prevent any possible confusion, is to secure the username 'ubergames' for any and all of the third party services we use. :)

Today, I'm pleased to announce that after filing a request with Twitter, today, they released the username '@ubergames' into our control. ^_^

This was an account that was initially registered in 2009, tweeted 4 times, and was promptly abandoned ever since.

I'm hoping we'll be able to make much better use of it from here on. :)

Anyway, if you're on Twitter, feel free to follow us! (http://twitter.com/ubergames)

In the meantime, I need to fix the Twitter widget at the bottom of the page. Twitter recently deprecated the API it was using. :S

#43878 UberGames now on TwitchTV!

Posted by TiM on 25 May 2013 - 02:35 PM

Haha I know right. I never imagined that was even possible. XD

Yeah, haha me too. It's been a while since I gamed seriously. Better get some training in. XD

Alrighty! My first stream is live right now! I'm just going to do some messing with the iPokédex code for starters.

Come say hi! :)

Hi Tony! Welcome to the forum!

Veritas is right on the money! The Last Outpost has the most comprehensive download list of RPG-X related media at the moment.

If you're after anything else, the majority of our other projects are available on the 'Files' links above.

Let us know what you're after in particular. :)

#43875 UberGames now on TwitchTV!

Posted by TiM on 23 May 2013 - 04:50 PM

Hi guys!

This is something I've been pursuing since November of last year, but as of this week, I was finally able to clear it up. :D

UberGames now has its own account on TwitchTV, the popular game streaming service.

The reason why it took so long to register is probably one of the most interesting cases I've ever seen. When trying to simply sign up the name, Twitch reported that it contained 'bad words'. I contacted support, and they were just as confused as I was that that was happening. Anyway, after a lot of tracking in the code, they discovered it was because 'UberGames' contains the word 'berga', which is apparently a form of Spanish profanity. I'm not sure what must have happened to make them think that censoring non-English profanity was necessary, so that was certainly one for the ages. XD

Anyway, I've got two goals of the UberGames Twitch account. :D

  1. For UberGames members to livestream their games projects
  2. For UberGames members to show off their mad fragging skillz. XD

At some point, I'm planning to do a live stream of an EF SP playthrough, and if I can set up the Xbox properly, maybe some of my office's Halo nights too. :D

If you've got something you'd like to see, suggest it here!

The address is http://twitch.tv/ubergames

#43874 New Star Trek Game Engine

Posted by TiM on 23 May 2013 - 03:35 PM

Haha. Funny you should mention the engine code. XD

When Ravensoft released the JKA/JK2 source code to pay tribute to LucasArts' demise, the very first thing I thought was 'Ooh. Hang on. Does this mean Raven might be responsive to releasing all of EF's engine code too?'

So since then, I went through and spam mailed every person I'd talked to in the past asking about whether releasing both EF's single player and multiplayer codebases is possible.

Sadly, I didn't get a single response from any of them. :( Shortly after that, I noticed that the JK2/JKA code had since been taken back down (I'm guessing someone had a legal problem with it going up). :(

I'm going to try and follow it up with them again soon-ish.

I've personally been playing with the latest build of the icculus Quake 3 engine fork of the Quake 3 software. It features a lot of improvements over the raw Quake 3 engine EFHM is using, including a fully pimped out renderer using the latest OpenGL standards. I'd like to see if we could do something with that, but at the moment, I'm busy trying to get one of my iOS apps off the ground, so that's taking all of my free time now (And as a result, all of my C knowledge has been corrupted by Objective-C right now XD).

But in any case, even if we did have the sheer manpower to port all of this to another game engine like Source/Unit/UDK, the fact of the matter is we'd then lose rights to use the Star Trek IP. We're able to do it with Elite Force since it's an officially licensed Star Trek game. If we were to go beyond that scope, it would most likely count as copyright infringement. :(

#43854 I give up ... (2)

Agreed. If Apprentice has truly given up, then this will be the last of these threads. But if this happens again, I'm going to delete them.

#43850 I give up ... (2)

Posted by TiM on 07 April 2013 - 05:31 AM

I'm always calm when talking about serious matters. But you can't really expect us to treat you fairly when you've behaved so much worse than anyone else here.

Also, I'm not mocking about the branding. Just pointing it out. :)

Seriously man. Just walk away. It's not worth it. You've pretty much hit the point where you've managed to annoy everyone so much that no one wants me to unban you from here.

#43847 I give up ...

Posted by TiM on 06 April 2013 - 04:31 PM

Having a nice relaxing evening in Japan here. I have no motivation to actually read that, so I will be brief.

I have two things to say. :)

1) When the height of your maturity level is to slander me on your blog because you didn't get your way, I can't really help you anymore. http://puu.sh/2uZND.png

2) It's UberGames, not Ubergames. Please get the branding right. XD

I'm out. Have a nice weekend everyone! ^_^

#43817 In Japan! Again!

Posted by TiM on 18 March 2013 - 03:47 PM

Sup guys!

I finally got a free moment, so I thought I'd just let it drop where I've been. XD

After doing a couple of Skype interviews, and going through a rather lenghty visa application, I've moved to Japan where I'll be working at a company in central Tokyo.

The company's called pixiv, and probably the best way to describe them is probably a Japanese version of deviantArt. They've been around since 2007 and they already have a seriously prominent presence in Asia. Beyond that, they're also looking into expanding to Western markets as well, so it's some pretty exciting stuff.

I've been brought on board as an iOS developer, focusing on their official app. We just released the latest version today and we're already busy on what we'll do next. :D

I've initially committed to 6 months, but I'll be seeing how we go after that. I've brought my MacBook Air and as much of UberGames' site assets with me, so I can continue adding those last components to the site (Although a the moment, an iComics update is a bit more critical).

In any case, it's pretty awesome being in Japan. Definitely a change of pace. XD

More updates will follow! Later!

#43816 5th Generation iPod touch Vector Template

Posted by TiM on 18 March 2013 - 03:28 PM

This is a little thing I did as a bit of a diversion from a day of solid coding. XD

When it comes to iOS device templates (For making promo shots of your apps), Apple only ever supply the black version of their devices. And not only that, they're usually in a raster format, and at a resolution of < native Retina sizes. So as a result of that, I usually make all of my promo shots using third party templates, which are more often than not, completely vector, so they can be resized to any size you want.

In any case, after searching high and low, I noticed a rather sad thing: No one's made a third party template of the latest iPod touch. :(

Although the black version looks pretty darn close to the iPhone 5, the white version comes in a rainbow of different colours, which could be used to make any app promos look a lot more colourful.

So over the weekend, I tried taking the raster template Apple provided, and painting a completely vector-based version over the top of it. After that, I then tried converting it over to the white colour scheme.

Attached is what I ended up with. Those two designs were made entirely in Photoshop using vector shapes and layer styles (basically, shadows and gradients everywhere. XD)

At some point soon, I'll upload them to UberGames Files if anyone else wants to use them. In the meantime, I'm giving the white one a testrun on iComics.co. XD

#43407 UberGames.net: Stuff to Do

Posted by TiM on 10 January 2013 - 05:30 PM

Alrighty. So while the main portion of the site is now live, the whole thing is pretty far from being finished. Getting the main portion live ASAP was pretty crucial as it'll start to give Google time to recover all of the page rankings we used to have (hopefully they're still there XD).

Here's the master list of stuff that still needs doing:

The forum

  • Implement search on the UberGames theme. Can't believe I missed that. XD

The Main Site

  • Links page. A place to collect all of the other UberGames site links (eg bug tracker, wikis etc) in one spot. Maybe also some affiliate linking. :)

Files

  • Um. Gotta get all of the UberGames project files on there, and then start looking at other files we can mirror off it. :) (We seriously have tonnes of space and bandwidth in there. It's awesome!)

The Store

  • More items. As you may have seen, the store is indeed up and running. XD However, it's still lacking a lot of items. I'm going to go through and clean it up and start adding more. :)

The Wikis

  • Erm this one's a challenge. By today's standards, the wikis are horribly out of date. At this point, I'm thinking it might be better to install a fresh copy of MediaWiki, and merge all of the content from the older wikis into it.

Bug tracker

  • Tracking down the backup database for this thing. In the meantime, there's a secondary one that's been setup for the RPG-X beta test.

I'll be trying to knock these off one-by-one. We'll have to see which ones are the highest priority now... hrmm...
