Hehehe this is pretty damn funny. :P

I was talking to RedTechie in Ventrilo today and he was saying he didn't feel as geeky as he used to.

I decided to up the ante by demonstrating a pretty geeky thing I think I discovered the other day. RedTechie wondered out loud if anyone else has seen this before, and Google came up negative, so I'm gonna wonder it here. :P

I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure I discovered a mesh error in the CG model of the Defiant that is seen in the opening crawl of Deep Space Nine.

When the ship passes in front of the camera, after moving around the station's pylon, if you look at the section directly above the head module of the Defiant, you can see a jet black line. As the ship rotates around, you can see a white-ish object move through that line.

My guess there is that when that model of the Defiant was created, the polygons that make up that front groove weren't properly closed, and so what we're actually seeing is a portion from the rear of the nacelle of the Defiant passing visibly by a crack in the front.

Either way, whenever I watch DS9 now, I can't take my eyes off that thing.

I'm not sure if that was an intentional effect or not. I wonder if it's possible to contact anyone who actually worked at Foundation Imaging and ask them.

Anyway... since nothing like this came up on Google.... I wonder if we're the first forum to mention this... if so, w00t. O_O

+1 to Epic Geekiness. :D

well to me it looks like a specular reflection of something.

That's what Red said. That's the only other thing it could be.

I don't think so though. The lighting of the ship changes as it rotates around, and yet that black stripe along the top there stays the same, suggesting it's not actually a solid surface.

If it was a specular highlight, I would have expected it to be much longer as well.

Damn. When I first read the start of your post and before looking at the picture, I thought "what, was there a big white triangle randomly flashing on and off the screen?" as you get in bad graphics and glitches (think: RPG-X model system mark 0.1).

That line could pass off as lighting in the picture, but I need to go watch it in HD or something to see it properly while it's moving.

I don't think the guys at Foundation Imaging will like you (literally) poking holes in their released work ;)

ROFL! I've yet to see something that huge happen, but I'm sure I'm not looking hard enough.

Yeah it could, but I don't think so... it's not consistent enough.

Either way yeah, it's a very picky, geeky line of discussion. It made me a little sad though since it totally broke my suspension of disbelief in the opening credits. ;)
