Ok guys, here is my problem.

A few days ago, i reinstalled my pc, clean install. Now whenever
i play elite force, i get like 15 FPS on most RPG-X maps. This should happen
as before the reinstall i got 120 (ATI hd 4850X2, intel core7 920, so yeah
decent pc).

I was on windoes 7 64 bits before, im on it now, so its not cuz i installed
a different os. The only thing i can think of is the drivers. I was running on
catalyst 9 before, but now 10 is out so i got that. I already tried
installing the older catalyst 9 drivers but with those ef wont even boot.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

PS sorry if i posted this in the wrong section, couldnt find a section to post this in tbh.

Make sure com_hunkmegs is at least 128!

Also the Quake 3/ID Tech 3 Engine has sometimes problems with newer multicore cpus so you might try setting it to use a single core in Task Manager.

Did you do a clean install of Catalyst 9 dirvers? There might be some conflicts with the former installed driver prventing EF to start if it was not removed completely.

And yeah it's in the wrong section but I'll move it ... no problem.

Intel Core i7... pfft
I'm on the i5 with affinity set to run it in 2 cores. Works fine :)

I did all of the above:

-com_hunkmegs = 512 (first thing i did)
-Tried running it with affinity to 2 and 1 core, only made it worse (i was running it on 8 cores before so it should work :S)
- I did a complete wipe of the drivers with the catalyst uninstall program, might still be conflicts though cuz im in windows and that always leaves somethign behind somewhere.

So yeah, i dunno :S I used to run this on 120 fps on the EXACT SAME configuration. Brex also has the same display drivers as me so its not a driver problem either...

Your computer is over-powerful then obviously :P
Nothing uses 4 cores let along 8 cores and very probably nothing EVER will :D

Actually, rendering a 3d scene uses every core avaialbe, also converting videos uses as much cores as avaialbe.

Anyway i know it cannot be my hardware since i didnt change anything and it worked before.

8 cores are nice if you use CPU intensive applications such as the 3DS Max raytracer, even though it won't use all 8 cores you're still able to work on something else in the meanwhile.

Anyway most renderer stuff e.g. resizing images, calculating shader effects is done on the CPU not the GPU. I heard from people that they have problems on some Source engine mods where newer Intel and AMD CPUs don't increase the CPU frequency automatically which results in low FPS and short freezes.

It might be something similar with your problem ... no idea if there are ways in windows or tools by Intel or AMD which allow you to set this manually but it might be worth a try to search for such tools.

Might be, like i said i never had this problem before. Neither on Vista or on windows 7 with the exact same hardware.

The FPS is solid 90 (capped) on stock EF Holomatch maps but gets crap on RPG maps, even
when loading them while not running RPG-X.

I had a similar problem when installing the new Catalyst drivers (V10). After completely deinstalling it and installing a quite old version (middle of year 2009 Version) after a couple of attempts it worked again.
Since that I haven't tried to update Catalyst yet 'cause I'm not sure if the problem of extremely low FPS appears again.

Maybe you'd like to test that...?

Have you been using "Device Manager" within Control Panel to "Uninstall" the device/drivers (ticking delete device drivers also) ?

Yep, I recommend JDavid's method ^^

According to Catalyst version, I'm not 100% sure because I'm not at home (currently using my notebook with nVidia graphics), but it was something like Catalyst 9.5 as far as I remember. Good luck!

Alright, I'll try that. I tried it before but i think i might have de-installed the drivers in a wrong way since i only used the catalyst uninstall manager and after i installed the older 9.x version, EF wouldnt even boot. Thanks for the tip.

Do you have DirectX 9 installed? If not you can try this as well. It is better to use the original DirectX 9 instead of trusting in downward compability of the newer DX versions.

Yeah i also installed DirectX 9 (atleast i think i did, i got the "redistributable" fromt he microsoft site but im not sure if i got the correct one cuz the microsoft download center is a mess). I also did the "older drivers" thing, but still to no avail. I'm going to reinstall my computer one last time (i need 64 bits anyways and am no on 32) and then ill install catalyst drivers 9.x instead of first doing 10 and then downgrading, thats my last idea,
