is a terrible name for a video game but it is going to be amazing. It's formally referred to as Unknown and Lux Tenebras, both of which sound cooler, but whatever.

Amnesia is an upcoming game created by the four-(maybe five)-man team at Frictional Games, developers of the absolute scariest experience of your life and, in my opinion, the best game series (and tying for best game story with Cryostasis even though they're told in ultra-completely different manners) of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Little is known about it and I doubt you will ever know much about it since the main idea is for the game to be about the player having amnesia and piecing the story together as it goes along. All you know is that something is hunting you really.

It will be again a horror game, and what isn't completely terrifying will still be intuitive choc full of atmosphere as well as (as far as I have learned) plenty of puzzle solving. It's based in the eighteenth century in what has looked so far like a castle, or at least what has been seen mostly so far could be described as a dungeon, since there is also some imagery of fancy old houses.

It's currently in the alpha stage and is supposedly coming out near the middle of this year for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh.

Articles about the game and the motivations of its developer are ahead. The first through fifth articles should be read in the order I post them probably:

Here is a slightly dated tech demonstration video of the guy fooling around with breakable objects and sneaking in one of the levels:
And here's more fooling around with physics:
Despite the general uselessness of the videos, I must say they do have compelling atmosphere. :)

The game will also include an SDK for building your own levels and making models and materials with ease. Considering the completely amazing physics these guys use and the amount of creativity involved, rather than having to focus on scripting every single damn object to simply exist and not crash the engine, I'll probably mod the hell out of it when it comes out. Here's a video showing what the map editor can do with thirty minutes of design and ten or eleven lines of scripts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XojVUZJPmc

Also a teaser, some screenshots, and a preorder came out today.

And the video. It's hard to see in some places because YouTube seems to darken videos and the game is dark by nature, but it's still well-done.
Warning: makes your balls shrink.

2,000 preorders before the end of May and a commentary option will be included.
