New EliteForce release, ver. 1.37

Hallo,

A long time has passed since last release so it definitely is time for the fourth generation of my engine. Of course there are fixes and new features.
* The most important feature is HTTP/FTP download support. Actually, even more protocols are supported (see libcurl homepage for more info). This feature can speed up .pk3 downloads alot if you want to join a server and you don't have a required file.
* Ogg Vorbis sound files are now natively supported by the engine so you can use them in maps or mods if you like to.
* Sound attenuation has been made much more like the original so an often voiced point of critic should be dealt with as well.
* There is an experimental feature on the server side that will reduce unsteady movement of players with wrong packet settings.
* A MacOSX universal binary is now available.

It just keeps getting better and better!

I took a look at the ioquake3.org web site to see what is coming next but there isn't a whole lot planned it seems. Here's a few ideas I had, in case you aren't watching all the threads around here:
1. particle system
2. improved physics (my first thought was ragdoll, but everything else could use improving too; TiM mentioned http://www.physicsengine.com/ as a possible candidate)
3. http://dslyecxi.com/...oftactical.html
4. Surround sound and/or EAX support
5. DDS texture support

KICK ASS!!! I always wanted that feature in EF! Sweet :)

One question how do you point it to a HTTP or supported protocol service? im guessing a server side or client side CVAR?

1. I have noticed that the windows installer given in the link is faulty. I will have to update it. In the meantime it stays deleted. I will post here when there's news on this.
2. See the README-IO.txt for more info. Generally it's just a server-side cvar which points to a specific URL.

sv_dlURL is the base of the URL that contains your custom .pk3 files
the client will append both fs_game and the filename to the end of
this value. For example, if you have sv_dlURL set to
"http://ioquake3.org", fs_game is "baseq3", and the client is
missing "test.pk3", it will attempt to download from the URL
"http://ioquake3.org/baseq3/test.pk3"



Sweet that will allow server admins to organize files alot better :)

this new engine doesn't seem to work properly with RPG-X, will RPG-X 2 be compatible?

I had the same problem with the graphics in the menus on an older release of ioEF, I fixed it but can't remember what exactly I have done.

And the http download is great, finally we don't have to search an download but can download it from the server ( don't know any mirror for EF maps that allows you to download with 1,6 mb/s, hehe)

and i am not seeing anything different it looks the same as EF was execpt the menu textures and busted and the downloads are still the same

Please give me the output from your console and tell me the error messages you get.
This looks like it cannot find some textures.

And of course the downloads are the same if the server doesnt have an URL set where to download maps from.

Hrmm.... judging from that screenshot, that must be an error with the way the shaders are being initialized in the engine.

Only the boxes that are drawn using the 'uis.whiteShader' variable in the drawing API are broken in there...

And uis.whiteShader is linked to the shader loading API function which caches the texture "white".

I checked the shaders list. In the gfx.shader file, "white" is defined as caching a texture named: *white

As far as I can see, *white must be a procedurally generated texture in the game engine. In which case, there is a bug in there somewhere that's causing it to not validate.

1. I need error output. Error messages. I can't help you as long as I cannot reproduce it or I have no way of knowing what goes wrong.
2. You can try systematically removing certain .pk3 files from the search path of ioEF. I am almost certain this bug is being caused by some buggy pk3 file.
